The president of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker has said there is “no room whatsoever” to renegotiate Theresa May’s Brexit deal.

Speaking in the European Parliament today he said re-opening the withdrawal agreement “will not happen”, adding that the best the prime minister could hope for was “further clarity and further interpretations without reopening the withdrawal agreement” when she meets EU leaders in Brussels this week.

The Prime Minister delayed a meaningful vote on her final deal with Brussels yesterday in order to get assurances on the backstop with Northern Ireland.

Responding to May’s decision to delay the vote on the Brexit deal, Professor Richard Toye, from the University of Exeter, said: “Today’s Government U-turn significantly increases the chances of a No Deal Brexit.

“It further creates the impression of a government that is indecisive and not in control of events.

“Having said that MPs should step up to their responsibilities and back her deal, Theresa May has now denied them the opportunity to do so in a timely way.”
