These heart-warming pictures show the moment a surf instructor gave a free lesson – to brave firefighters who battled the Grenfell Tower inferno.

The firefighters were invited down for the lesson by Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, who thought a day riding the waves would be the perfect therapy.

Michelle Grenfell from Penzance fire station helped organise for the London firefighters to come to Cornwall.

A group of 12 took to the waves at Porthmeor beach, near St Ives in Cornwall, and were soon getting the hang of things and showing off their skills.

The visitors, who arrived on Wednesday, August 6, were all part of London Fire Brigade and attended the devastating Grenfell Tower fire on June 14, which killed at least 80 people.

During their time in the South West they took part in a range of activities over three days, organised b the fire station with the help and generosity of local businesses and organisations.

Wayne U’Chong, watch manager for North Kensington Blue Watch, said: “It’s been absolutely fantastic.

“We feel that the support across the whole country has been fantastic.

“We managed to get people down here, it was a little difficult getting everyone down here because of the shift system and matching everything up, but we managed to get eight of us down and I think the others will be really jealous.

“Its great to get away from London and Cornwall is a beautiful part of the world, and we get to enjoy a bit of sunshine.
