Police hunting robber who only targets Greggs arrest 40-year-old man

Police hunting a machete-wielding robber who only targets branches of GREGGS have arrested a 40-year-old man.

The suspect is being quizzed by officers after five shops across Birmingham were targeted between February and July this year.

West Midlands Police swooped at an address in the Sparkbrook area of the city on Tuesday morning (8/8) and arrested the man and seized a machete.

The force said the first raid happened on February 28 at a Greggs in the Fox & Goose Shopping Centre in Ward End.

The robber then targeted a branch in Weoley Castle on March 21 and a shop in Druids Heath on April 11.

The final two attacks were in Acocks Green on May 23 and in Erdington on July 4.

Detective Constable Laura Halpin, from Force CID in Stechford, said: “We’ve linked at least five robberies at Greggs shops where an offender has struck at opening time and threatened staff with a machete wrapped in a plastic bag before making off with cash.

“No-one was hurt but clearly these were traumatic incidents for the staff who were faced with an armed man and threatened with violence.

“Our enquiries led us to the home address of our suspect in Sparkbrook and officers moved in at around 8am to make an arrest.

“As part of our enquiries we have also recovered a machete.”
