Beer of the Week: Innis & Gunn Mangoes on the Run IPA

Innis & Gunn has become one of the UK’s most successful international craft beer businesses since launching in 2003. In 2016, for instance, the brewery sold more than 27 million bottles of beer around the world.

Operating from a site in Perth, Scotland, Master Brewer Dougal Gunn Sharp and his team develop and barrel-age an assortment of beers sourced to over 28 countries. In addition to their core range, Innis & Gunn also brew a constantly developing programme of limited-edition, barrel-aged beers. The brewery also opened their first Beer Kitchen – a restaurant concept with focus on beer and food pairings – in Edinburgh during 2015, and have since opened sites in Dundee, St Andrews and Glasgow.

Following the success of Session IPA and Gunnpowder IPA, the latest addition to Innis & Gunn’s IPA portfolio is the brewery’s most refreshing limited-edition release yet. Loaded with Hercules, Citra and Simcoe hops, Mangoes on the Run is brewed with fresh mangoes: refreshing and ideal for summer. Speaking on the launch of Mangoes on the Run IPA, Innis & Gunn Founder and Master Brewer, Dougal Gunn Sharp, said: “We wanted to create the perfect beer for summer, and our new Mangoes on the Run IPA is the fruitiest number we’ve ever brewed – packed with tropical flavours and fruity hops for a mightily refreshing beer.”

On pour, Mangoes on the Run is amber, crowned with an off-white head boasting fair retention. On the nose, prominent aromas of juicy mango are joined by further fruit notes of orange rind and grapefruit, complete with some dry, grassy hop character, resinous pine and some light honeyed barley malt. The bold, thirst-quenching mango element continues on the palate, joined by a snappy hop bitterness, background light malts and bread, plus creamy vanilla that leads into the juicy, slightly resinous finish with good bitter-sweet balance.

Mangoes on the Run is available in 330ml can and on draught in The Beer Kitchens and from select bars throughout the summer. The 330ml can is currently available online at innisandgunn.com, and in Sainsbury’s and Morrisons stores nationwide.
