Founded in 1995, Bath Ales brews a distinctive range of premium, well-crafted beers from its west country base. A new chapter began for Bath Ales in 2016, acquired by St Austell Brewery, one of only 28 independent, family-owned brewers in the country and one of Cornwall’s oldest businesses. Following this takeover, Bath Ales will launch a brand new brew house, Hare Brewery, later this month, home to some of the most sophisticated and technically-advanced brewing and bottling facilities in the South West, with the capacity to brew more than 14.5 million pints. Celebrating this renewed brewing freedom, Bath Ales have recently launched two brand new beers: Lansdown IPA and Sulis – the brewery’s first lager.
Made to exacting standards, Sulis lager is inspired by Sulis Minerva, the Roman Goddess of Bath. Brewed with Lemon Drop and Hüll Melon hops, the lager has a bright freshness with some subtle fruitiness. On pour, the lager is pale gold with subdued aromas of pale malt, light honey and lemon zest notes. On the palate, light malt and honey savours continue, complete with some yeast, melon and white bread. A light bitterness is then well-balanced with some sweetness: light bodied and slightly thin, but refreshing and highly quaffable. The finish is then crisp, clean and slightly dry with a further zing of lemon.
Speaking on the launch of Sulis lager, Darren James, Senior Brewer at Bath Ales, said: “We’ve taken everything we’ve learned from the great lager brewers of Germany to make a classic and moreish beer then hopped it with exciting new hop varieties to give Sulis a unique fresh and subtle fruity flavour profile. The beer is perfectly pale and boasts a crisp and refreshing taste.
“Launching Sulis, our first lager, is a big moment for Bath Ales. We’ve taken the time to get this just right and hope the new beer really challenges drinkers’ perceptions of lager. Sulis is our ultimate English lager and we can’t wait to share it.”
