And Union Sunday Pale

With a focus on rationality and simplicity – the basic principles of modernism – at the helm, Bavarian craft beer brand And Union was set up in 2007. The product of a father, his son and his business partner, And Union works with brew-masters from four small, family-run Bavarian regional breweries, with all of their craft beers brewed in a traditional manner, using just barley, yeast, hops, and water. As a result, the brewing process for the unfiltered and unpasteurised beers is not rushed and can take up to 16 weeks to complete.

“A balanced and gently spiced, easy-like-Sunday-morning pale ale”, And Union Sunday Pale is brewed with an undisclosed blend of Hallertau aroma hops and American hops. Ensnared in a can with small print which reads “Don’t drink and drive for F@#k’s sake”, Sunday Pale has an opaque copper tone that’s crowned with a lathering off-white head. On the nose, bulbous notes of tropical fruit typical of American bittering hops are initially present, complete with a profound aroma of syrupy pineapple juice. Elsewhere, further notes of blood orange juice, grapefruit peel and fresh bread are joined by a whiff of sappy, resinous pine. On the palate, the beer is somewhat oily, with a medium body. Flavours of meaty fermented yeast are complete with a medium bitterness, some cereal malt and more blood orange.

Concluded with a dry finish, Sunday Pale is gentle on the palate. While the taste is less potent than the bouquet suggests, this beer isn’t boring like so many others with similar description. As the can implies, Sunday Pale is certainly easy drinking, though we suggest waiting until at least noon to crack open one of these vivid orange cans.
