A police officer has been dismissed – after punching a man in the face on a train.

Former inspector Chris Davidson of the Thames Valley force assaulted the man on a journey to High Wycombe, Bucks.

He initially said he went over to the man to ‘calm the situation’ and his approach caused the man to swing and punch him on his right eye.

But a misconduct hearing panel concluded that Mr Davidson from High Wycombe hit the man first despite knowing there was no lawful justification for his actions.

Due to Mr Davidson’s act of violence on July 11, 2016, he was dismissed without notice for breaching standards of professional behaviour.

Deputy Chief Constable John Campbell said: “Inspector Davidson assaulted a member of the public while travelling on a train and was dishonest when providing an account about the circumstances. There was no justification whatsoever for his actions.

“We expect our officers to uphold high standards of behaviour, whether they are on or off duty. Inspector Davidson failed to do so and there is no place in our Force for those who behave in the manner he did.”
