Jess Phillips says she may lose her job by backing a second referendum, but her “constituents’ jobs are more important”.

The Labour MP was speaking in her constituency of Birmingham Yardley this weekend in response to criticisms that MPs should reflect the will of the people they represent.

Yardley voted Leave in the 2016 referendum although Birmingham was deeply divided over the issue.

More than three quarters voted to Remain in some wards but the same ratio could be found in favour of Leave in others.

Phillips said that by and large her constituents “trust her to do the best thing for them” and that “no constituency is full of people who universally support the member of parliament”.

She added: “The vast majority of people voted Leave because they wanted to show the system that they weren’t happy.

“And who can blame them?”
