Magistrates need ‘more information’ to sentence football ace David Beckham after he admitted using his phone while driving his Bentley.
And it means the former football ace might still have to appear in court to be sentenced.
The former England captain was charged last month with the driving offence after a member of the public spotted him on the phone while driving.
His case was sent to Bromley Magistrates’ Court to be dealt with by way of the Single Justice Procedure (SJP) today (TUES).
But court staff said this afternoon that the case had been adjourned for a date to be set for a procedure known as ‘to show cause’.
The member of court staff said: “They [the magistrates] have requested more information.
“It could be the circumstances under which it happened or it could be because they don’t have enough information about the charge to make a decision.”
Police confirmed yesterday the court received a guilty plea by post from Becks.
Reforms to prosecution at the lower courts means SJP can be used to deal with less serious cases such as driving matters more swiftly.
The secretive proceedings are held in public and cannot be attended by members of the public or press.
It is believed the 43-year-old’s next hearing at Lavender Hill will be held in open court.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star was said to have been spotted driving his 2018 Bentley while using his phone in Great Portland Street on 21 November.
Beckham swerved a speeding prosecution for driving a loaned Bentley at 59mph in a 40mph zone in west London two month earlier.
Celebrity lawyer Nick Freeman argued a notice of intended prosecution (NIP) was not received until one day after the statutory 14-day limit.
The technicality meant he did not face any further action.
