A UKIP councillor has been mocked on social media for sending out a pamphlet littered with errors – including mispelling the word BRITAIN.
The clumsy leaflet – shared with residents in Peterborough – focused on campaigning to have jailed MP Fiona Onasanya removed from her seat.
The leaflet, which displayed the UKIP logo and a picture of Peterborough councillor John Whitby, read: “Peterborough. Shaping Britians Future”.
Eagle-eye social media users were quick to point out the grammatical errors as the leaflet read “Britians” instead of Britain’s.
The letter continued to read: “We’ve been let down! As you may be aware our MP has recently been convicted of a serious criminal offence, but has now appealed against it.”
A hilarious tweet featuring a picture of the leaflet quickly went viral with nearly 10,000 twitter users responding to it.
The Twitter user Chris Struthers (@Strutcakes), posted a picture of the leaflet with the following caption: “1. Can’t spell Britain.
“2. Misplaced apostrophe.
“3. UKIP have no MPs.
“4. Could have done with with (sic) a comma in that opening sentence.
“5. Is among the first to complain that somebody is unable to use the English language.”
After sparking interest, Chris continued the savage thread writing: “6. Probably not a real pirate.
“7. I may have peaked wit-wise, but feel free to follow and one day I might tweet something else that is marginally witty.
“8. I used the word “with” twice in point 4.”
And social media users were quick to join the brutal grammatical bashing on the Cambridgeshire councillor.
One Twitter user wrote: “My name is Peter. It’s short for Peterborough. I fir one am being proud to be Britainish.”
Another wrote: “Can’t wait for Britians’ future. I’m sure it’s going to be bitter….I mean briter.”
And a third wrote: “He’s referring to all the Brits called Ian. I think.”
Speaking about the grammar incident, Cllir John Whitby apologised for the circulation of the leaflet.
He said in a statement: “I typed it incorrectly and it’s an embarrassment that it happened.
“A few of us misproofread [sic] it and missed two letters and a comma.
“It’s important to get right, but it’s an honest mistake. I’ll hold my hands up.”
He explains that the Peterborough branch of the right-wing political party caught the error after “200-300” leaflets had been distributed.
The error was then corrected and 10,000 leaflets featuring the correct spelling of ‘Britain’ were circulated.
The councillor for Fletton and Stanground saw the positive in the blunder, saying: “If the only thing people can pick up is a couple spelling errors then we’ve done our job.”
