Tom Brady threw four touchdown passes and became a four time Super Bowl winner as the New England Patriots came through two weeks of controversy to beat the Seattle Seahawks 28-24. It was a fantastic game that was littered with drama throughout but for me, the 4th quarter demonstrated why the Super Bowl is such a great sporting occasion.
At 24-14 going into the 4th it looked like a repeat of last year for the Seahawks. Richard Sherman, ever the showman, mouthed to camera the score to millions and was ever so confident. However, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady had different ideas. I mentioned in a previous post how I believed Brady was on a quest for that fourth ring and that nothing was going to stop him. His final two drives put him right up there as the best ever QB to play the game.
Brady got them into the end zone twice in the 4th, but Seattle had just over two minutes left of the game to somehow steal the win. What occurred was like something out of a Hollywood movie. This was the venue where the Patriots were robbed of Super Bowl XLII with a helmet catch of David Tyree of the New York Giants. It looked like history was going to repeat itself when Russell Wilson threw to Jermaine Kearse who somehow caught the ball after it bounced off both legs into his arms without touching the ground.
Everyone watching couldn’t believe what had happened. Eventually Seahawks got to the goal-line and it seemed a simple run by Marshawn Lynch will be the man to win another Super Bowl for Seattle. What happened though was Patriots’ rookie Malcolm Butler intercepted a pass by Wilson aimed for Ricardo Lockette to seal the game. The Seahawks’ frustration got the better of them and a brawl in the end zone at the very end was the only unsavoury moment in an otherwise pulsating encounter.
Why didn’t they run the ball with Lynch? Was it cockiness by coach Pete Carroll by trying to throw the ball and rub it in to the Patriots faces? The Seahawks will have the entire off-season to contemplate the decision not to use ‘the beast.’
However let’s not take anything away from New England. Their defence kept Seattle out the end-zone in the 4th. Tom Brady had the game of his life and the Patriots had all the incentives they needed and wanted this win so much that they fully deserved to become Super Bowl champions.
