Arsenal who are only three points behind Chelsea in the premiership after a return to form late in teh season have been drawn against Atlético Madrid in a mouth-watering Euopa League semi final.

Marseille will play Salzburg.

Atlético were the team Gunners manager Arsene Wenger was hoping to avoid until the final in Lyon, conceding this week to BT Sport that they are “the strongest on paper.”

On the first legs on Thursday 26 April Arsenal host Atlético Madrid,  Marseille host Salzburg.

The second legs are on Thursday 3 May with Atlético Madrid v Arsenal, Salzburg v Marseille.

Antoine Griezmann whose display on Thursday was not his best at the  lacklustre 1 – 0 defeat at Sporting CP, Atlético Madrid going through on an aggregate 2 -1.

Yet Arsenal will be dreading the French striker who has helped power Atlético to second place in La Liga.

And they will see how Jan Oblak, the goalkeeper Arsenal were trying to poach for last summer fares against Lacazette, Elneny, Ramsay and co who got through to the semi finals with a convincing 3-6 on aggregate. The first leg is just three days before Arsenal have to travel to Old Trafford to face a Manchester United squad that just defeated Premiership leaders Man City.
