A real-life ‘hobbit house’ is set to go under the hammer.

The straw bale shepherds’ hut, which is built into a hillside, is located in just over an acre of land and resembles a glamping pod.

The home, which offers picturesque views of Holme Valley, West Yorks., was originally built by hobby farmers as somewhere for them and their sheep to shelter.

The design is based on a medieval round house and the owners had help from one of the world’s leading experts in straw building.

The unique Meltham ‘low impact’ getaway is up for auction with a start price of a modest £50,000 but there is a catch.

There are no mod cons, running water or electricity and buyers may need planning permission for alternative uses of the property, say estate agents’ Boultons.

They say: “Hobbits, shepherds, bodgers, off-gridders and glampers: take notice of this beautifully constructed straw bale ’roundhouse’.

“Surrounded by approximately 1.1 acres of grazing land and recently planted and fast becoming established fruit orchard containing several varieties of apples, cherry, plum and pear trees on a prominent hillside, it’s positioned between the villages of Netherton and Meltham.

“A rare chance to get your hairy hands on this unique low impact building which has clearly been a labour of love.”

The building and land go up for auction at the John Smith’s Stadium on Thursday September 14 at 7pm.
