Perhaps calling ourselves law experts would be a stretch to far, but it really is quite a challenge to try and remember the last time a lawyer denigrated his client’s truth-telling abilities to this extent and ended up winning the case. Both the self-appointed ‘Top G’ and his brother Tristan Tate are behind bars in America, awaiting extradition back to the UK to face dozens of charges including rape, sexual exploitation, trafficking, and the making or possession of indecent images of children.
Their dramatic arrest in Miami last month has left the pair in limbo. On Friday, their bail hearing was held in Miami and lasted for eight hours, with a decision yet to be made. Fighting for their freedom, the Tates have put their faith in Joel McBride – who certainly isn’t afraid to speak his own mind.
The crux of the defence’s argument rests on playing down the inflammatory and controversial statements that have been shared by Andrew Tate. His extreme sexism and misogyny has been broadcast across the world, and he stands accused of being one of most toxic influences for young males.
In true rent-a-gob fashion, Mr. Tate and his lawyers want to make this an argument about free speech. On Friday, McBride argued his clients were being punished for things they had said, rather than what they had done. But 59 charges on their rap sheet say differently.
Bail hearing to continue next week
Whether this aggressive approach will pay dividends for the defendants remains to be seen. However, McBride’s remarks to the press have ended up going viral, after he bluntly turned fire towards the Andrew Tate fanboys, and claimed those who hung on his every word ‘have something wrong with them’.
