A video of Michael Gove promising that British bangers would continue to be supplied to Northern Ireland has been making the rounds on social media after the ‘battle of the bangers’ between the EU and UK was reignited.
Boris Johnson has been warned that the bloc will act “swiftly and resolutely” if he overrides the Brexit deal to let shops in Northern Ireland sell British sausages.
Under the current grace period written into the controversial Northern Ireland protocol, chilled meats made in mainland Britain can be shipped to Northern Ireland.
But, unless there is an imminent resolution, supermarket shelves in Northern Ireland will be without British sausages, with Brussels intent on forcing the UK to abide by Johnson’s Brexit deal.
Waiting in the Daily Telegraph on Tuesday, Maros Sefcovic – the European Commission’s vice president – said the EU “will not be shy in reacting swiftly, firmly and resolutely to ensure that the UK abides by its international law obligations”.
Just six months ago Gove labelled Sefcovic “the sausage king of Brussels” after they shook on a deal to allow British meat to cross the Irish sea, one which is creaking at the seams now.
At the time, Gove said: “Our agreement prevents any disruption at the end of the transition period on the movement of chilled meats. British sausages will continue to make their way to Belfast and Ballymena in the new year.”
