Reform MP Danny Kruger has said Brits who go on holiday during an election would be “disenfranchising themselves” and would not be allowed to vote by post.

Kruger said anyone wanting to vote at a general election would “need to do it in person” unless they are “literally unable to get there” under his party’s plans to curb postal voting.

In March, Reform announced that only elderly and disabled people, serving armed forces personnel, and those working overseas during an election would be able to use postal voting.

The party also said residents from Commonwealth countries would lose their right to vote and they would ban campaign material in foreign languages.

Speaking to Times Radio on Friday, Kruger was asked if his party’s plans were effectively disenfranchising people who happen to be on holiday when an election takes place.

The East Wiltshire MP replied: “Absolutely not, no. “If people are not around for the day in which the election is happening, they’re disenfranchising themselves.”

He continued:  “If you want to vote in our elections, you need to do it in person. That is a traditional principle.

“The postal vote is an exception awarded to people who are literally unable to get there.”

Reacting to Kruger’s comments and Reform’s electoral reform plans, former Tory education secretary Nicky Morgan siad they were “straight out of the Trump playbook.”

She told Times Radio: “This is not about trust in the voting system. This is about excluding people they think are less likely to vote for Reform.”
