Brexiteers have started trying to argue Great Britain is a “mid-Atlantic country” instead of a European one.
During an appearance on the Guido Fawkes Show, GB News’s US political editor Tom Harwood was discussing US-UK relations and Andy Burnham’s first meeting with Donald Trump.
After arguing the meeting showed how much the trans-Atlantic relationship had deteriorated in the last few years, Harwood said Burnham was greeted by the White House “like another European leader.”
He continued: “That is not where Britain should be. Britain is not a European country, we are a mid-Atlantic country and we always have been and that is what Britain does best as this place that doesn’t tie itself to the European continent.”

Harwood argued this was apparent both politically and culturally, before claiming half of Britain had been “radicalised” by Brexit into identifying as European.
The claim is of course laughable, and this was highlighted by European Movement chair Mike Galsworthy.
Sharing the podcast clip on X, he wrote: “What’s ‘mid-Atlantic’ about being east of Ireland & Portugal, fully on the European continental shelf, 21 miles from France & over 3,000 miles away from the US?
“Europe is north, south, east & west of the UK. Can we all re-gather our brains please.”
