Bernie Sanders has laid into Donald Trump over his multiple false pledges after the president’s latest promise of a financial gift for Americans.
This week, Trump said that if the Republicans win both chambers in November’s midterm elections, he will offer every adult American $5,000.
“I can make this promise to you. And here is my promise. If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate… because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000”, Trump said on the first day of the 2026 Republican National Convention in Dallas, Texas.
As there are nearly 270 million adults in America, this means that a $5,000 (£3,700) payout would cost the US government some $1.3 trillion.

Trump gave no details on how the plan would work, however, nor did he provide any details where over a trillion dollars would come from.
His promise was quickly labelled as an “empty promise” by the Democrats, while others questioned if such a pledge was legal in the first place.
Several others pointed out the myriad of similar promises Trump has previously made to the electorate, none of which have materialised.
This was highlighted by Senator Bernie Sanders, who labelled Trump “our pathological liar-in-chief.”
In a post on X, Sanders listed each one of Trump’s previous promises, such as $5,000 DOGE dividend checks, $2,000 tariff dividend checks and the price of gas being $2 a gallon.
Sanders said each one was a “lie,” adding: “And now, after all of those lies, Trump wants you to believe that he will give every American adult a $5,000 check – but only if the Republicans win the midterms.
“No. I don’t think so. The Trump Administration is not about helping working families. It’s about giving a trillion dollars in tax breaks to the 1% and throwing 15 million Americans off the health care they have.”
