The North East Somerset MP recently explained that he completely opposes abortion and believed it should never be an option even if a woman has become pregnant as a result of rape.
So imagine the reaction today to his admission that his investment firm profits from pills used in dangerous illegal abortions.
The pro-life Tory is also one of the richest MP’s in parliament, living with his wife and six children in a Grade II-listed manor house while also owning the £4m freehold of a building in Pall Mall and a £1.5m leasehold of his flat inside it.
Rees Mogg co-founded Somerset Capital Management in 2007 and is one of 21 to be paid a total of £21.9m this year, according to company accounts.
Confronted by the fact that Somerset Capital Management have invested £5 million in Kalbe Farme, an Indonesian firm which manufactures termination drug misoprostol – sold under the brand name Invitec, the self-professed devout Catholic MP told the Sunday Mirror:
“It would be wrong to pretend that I like it but the world is not always what you want it to be.
“Kalbe Farma obeys Indonesian law so it’s a legitimate investment and there’s no hypocrisy. The law in Indonesia would satisfy the Vatican.”
Invitec is made to treat stomach ulcers but is widely used to trigger terminations in Indonesia, where abortions are illegal.
Rees-Mogg defended the investment: “This is not something I would wish to invest in personally but you have a duty as an investment manager not to impose constraints on investors.”
The MP, tipped by many Conservative rank and file to be the party’s next leader has angered many by insisting that the growing amount of food banks in Britain are “uplifting. ” And the multi-millionaire has also continuously voted against raising welfare in line with inflation and continues to support the use of zero hour contracts.
Matthew Parris a former Conservative MP who writes for the Times, the newspaper Jacob Rees-Mogg’s father edited has branded him an “unrelenting reactionary”.
