Andy Burnham has pledged to end rough sleeping in the UK in his first act as prime minister.
On Monday afternoon, Burnham officially replaced Keir Starmer as prime minister after he was invited to form a government by King Charles at Buckingham Palace.
In a powerful address outside Number 10, Burnham said his premiership needs to be the moment that “Britain starts to believe again” and that “we bring back hope.”
The prime minister said he would build a new economy, bring “life’s essentials back under public control” and re-industrialise Britain as part of a 10-year plan for the country.
Burnham also promised to lay out measures to help tackle the cost of living for people tomorrow, which would be paid for.

He then delivered his first key pledge as leader of the nation.
“We will help people to live well, building a more preventative state, investing in peoples success rather than paying for failure,” Burnham said.
“And that work starts now. I will soon go through that door behind me and issue my first instruction – to end rough sleeping in our country.”
Burnham finished his first speech as prime minister by saying “”I will give this my all” to “build a new national sense of unity”.
