The world famous Sesame Street has launched a new muppet character “Zari” a feminist from Afghanistan.
Zari will teach kids about “girl empowerment, social and emotional wellbeing.”
She will appear in season 5 of Baghch-e-Simsim, which is the Afghani version of Sesame Street.
The children’s show Twitter account went wild when the news was released this week.
Saad Mohseni, the President of the MOBY group, that airs various TV shows for children in Afghanistan said: “Sesame Street has done more to educate and entertain than any other children’s programme in Afghanistan.
“We are especially delighted about the introduction of Zari to Baghch-e-Simsim, which reflects Sesame’s commitment to the country and the show’s positive impact here.”
In a Sesame Street press release to support the launch they said “will focus on teaching “girls’ empowerment, national identity, physical health and social and emotional wellbeing.”

Journalism in Britain is under threat. The government is becoming increasingly authoritarian and our media is run by a handful of billionaires, most of whom reside overseas and all of them have strong political allegiances and financial motivations.
Our mission is to hold the powerful to account. It is vital that free media is allowed to exist to expose hypocrisy, corruption, wrongdoing and abuse of power. But we can't do it without you.
