A huge number of MPs have had their credit cards stopped since the 2015 general election.

An FOI request, by the Telegraph found that 377 MPs have been penalised for credit card infringements.

Boris Johnson, Jeremy Corbyn and Ian Paisley are among the MPs to be penalised since 2015 for breaking the rules by not providing receipts or failing to pay back ineligible expenses.

Cabinet Member Amber Rudd had her card suspended five times.

Energy Minister Claire Perry admitted to wrongly paying for her Amazon Prime subscription using her Parliamentary credit card.

The Telegraph reported the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority attempted to block the release of the information, fearing the “chilling effect” this information would have on the general public, many still angry over the expenses scandal.

Ruth Evans, the Chair of IPSA said: “Ten years ago, the difficulty of having politicians self-regulate their pay and expenses became all too clear.

“It led to the establishment of Ipsa. Since then, Ipsa has established a clear set of rules for MPs to follow and enforce them fairly. The openness and transparency of IPSA has become a model for legislatures worldwide.”

Journalism in Britain is under threat. The government is becoming increasingly authoritarian and our media is run by a handful of billionaires, most of whom reside overseas and all of them have strong political allegiances and financial motivations.

Our mission is to hold the powerful to account. It is vital that free media is allowed to exist to expose hypocrisy, corruption, wrongdoing and abuse of power. But we can't do it without you.
