Watch – Vote Leave campaign ‘totally illegal’ says whistleblower

A whistleblower has come forward to claim that the campaign to leave the EU, during the Brexit vote, was illegal.

Shahmir Sanni who for worked for BeLeave, accused Vote Leave of bypassing spending limits, by funnelling cash into the BeLeave campaign, as a way to get around the Electoral Commission’s funding rules.

Sanni told Channel 4 News that he ‘knows that Vote Leave cheated’ and that the outcome of the ‘referendum wasn’t legitimate’.

Mr Sanni claimed: ‘In effect they used BeLeave to over-spend, and not just by a small amount.

‘Almost two-thirds of a million pounds makes all the difference and it wasn’t legal.’

Vote Leave said it did not recall Mr Sanni working as a volunteer, but he was ‘like hundreds of others who occasionally visited the offices’.

The allegations become even murkier after Sanni said that he was “outed” as gay by Theresa May’s political secretary and Vote Leave campaigner, Stephen Parkinson.

Mr Parkinson responded to say he was ‘saddened’ by the ‘factually incorrect and misleading’ statements by Mr Sanni. Boris Johnson also claimed the accusation of illegality are false.

Sanni said: “Leaving the European Union, I agree with. But I don’t agree with losing what it means to be British in that process; losing what it means to follow the rules; losing what it means to be quite literally a functioning democracy.”
