Watch: Juncker said it was ‘mistake’ not to counter lies during EU referendum

At a press conference, the European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said the EU “would have been the only ones to destroy the lies which were circulated”.

But during the 2016 EU referendum campaigns, he said, David Cameron had requested that he keep out of it.

Juncker said the bloc regretted following the advice of David Cameron and letting the lies the Leave campaign told go unchallenged.

“It was a mistake not to intervene and not to interfere because we would have been the only ones to destroy the lies which were circulated,” he told a news conference in Brussels on Tuesday.

Now, responding to a question from a Greek broadcaster, he said it was a mistake “to listen too carefully to the British government – to Cameron”.

“It was a mistake not to intervene and not to interfere,” he told the gathered reporters.

“I was wrong to be silent at an important moment.”
