Professional darts player Eric Bristow could find himself in hot water over a homophobic rant over football’s sexual abuse scandal.

The five time World Champion, who is also an MBE, tweeted that he would have “sorted that poof out” if he was a child in that position, adding that “footballer’s are wimps”.

He later corrected his tweet saying he meant to say “paedo” rather than “poof”, after posting a string of tweets about how people are scared to speak the truth.

Twitter reacted angrily to the misguided outburst with people quick to point out the shortcomings of his vocabulary. Many also pointed out that unless he had been in a situation of being manipulated as a child he is hardly in any place to make comments such as: “U got to sought him out when u get older or dont look in the mirror glad i am a dart player proper men”.

Here’s his shameful rant in full:

Journalism in Britain is under threat. The government is becoming increasingly authoritarian and our media is run by a handful of billionaires, most of whom reside overseas and all of them have strong political allegiances and financial motivations.

Our mission is to hold the powerful to account. It is vital that free media is allowed to exist to expose hypocrisy, corruption, wrongdoing and abuse of power. But we can't do it without you.
