A nation-wide search has been launched after Sam the Space Dog was lost in space.

Children from Morecambe Bay Community Primary school launched the dog into space attached to a helium balloon with a GPS tracker and a GoPro. But when the payload returned to earth, the dog was nowhere to be seen.

Chris Rose, from SentIntoSpace.com, which creates educational space missions for schools and helped with the launch, told the Lancashire Evening News: “Our GPS tracking equipment and live telemetry systems quickly enabled us to find the payload when it returned to earth near Burnley, but when we got there Sam was nowhere to be seen.”

Rose added that he’s “pretty sure Sam landed within a 40-50 mile radius of Burnley,” which could put him as far away as York or Sheffield.

Journalism in Britain is under threat. The government is becoming increasingly authoritarian and our media is run by a handful of billionaires, most of whom reside overseas and all of them have strong political allegiances and financial motivations.

Our mission is to hold the powerful to account. It is vital that free media is allowed to exist to expose hypocrisy, corruption, wrongdoing and abuse of power. But we can't do it without you.
