Reactions: Right-wing journalist tells EU countries to be grateful for UK’s WWII contribution

“Without the UK half these countries would not be free to perform in any song contests. Arguably the other half wouldn’t either. Their thanks? Nil points.”

Twitter users have come out in force against journalist Tom Harwood over one of his Eurovision tweets, telling people European countries should be grateful for UK’s Second World War contribution.

Harwood, who previously worked for right-wing political news website Guido Fawkes and as a columnist for the Telegraph, is now a political correspondent for GB News – forecast to be a right-leaning TV channel by the Financial Times.

Here are 10 of the best reactions to Harwood’s tweet:

I see Tom Harwood is upset that the Eurovision votes were political, so wants them to be, err, political. https://t.co/l9OyqaVGFq

It's not 1945 anymore Tom. Churchill is dead, Spitfires have NHS taped on them and a Labour government created the NHS and social housing.

Face it, Global Britain is a myth and everyone's moved on. https://t.co/FyMR4Ypduz

This attitude is why you got zero points. https://t.co/sooLAuuQiv

Once again, the UK getting nil points has nothing to do with geo-politics.

Its because a bunch of suits chose their mate rather than looking outwards and realising we could do so much better. https://t.co/NK7jxXeLd2

Journalism in Britain is under threat. The government is becoming increasingly authoritarian and our media is run by a handful of billionaires, most of whom reside overseas and all of them have strong political allegiances and financial motivations.

Our mission is to hold the powerful to account. It is vital that free media is allowed to exist to expose hypocrisy, corruption, wrongdoing and abuse of power. But we can't do it without you.
