Reactions as UK rejoins EU Horizon programme under ‘bespoke deal’

"Brexit was, is, and always will be, utterly absurd," said one 'X' user.

Reactions have flooded social media today following the government’s announcement the UK will rejoin the EU’s flagship Horizon programme.

The UK was frozen out of the £85 billion science research programme following post-Brexit disputes between London and Brussels over the Northern Ireland Protocol.

A partnership between Europe’s leading research institutes and technology companies, the UK’s readmission ends a two-year standoff with the bloc over science funding.

Rishi Sunak’s spokesperson said in a statement that he had secured “improved financial terms of association” with the Horizon project.

“This is the right deal for the UK, unlocking unparalleled research opportunities, and also the right deal for British taxpayers,” they said.

Appearing on Sky News, science, innovation and technology secretary Michelle Donelan hailed this as “fantastic news” for the British taxpayer.

She said: “What we’re announcing today is a great deal – a deal that many said we wouldn’t be able to get.

“We didn’t just accept the deal on the table, we created a bespoke deal working with the EU. One that will enable our scientific community and businesses to have access to the world’s largest research collaboration programme, but also it gives us value for money for the taxpayer.”

“For instance, we’re not paying for the years that we didn’t associate, there’s also a claw back mechanism so if there was a situation where we weren’t getting as much out of it as we were putting into it that could automatically kick in.”

She added: “The really good thing as well as we’ve managed to achieve in there that we have an over performance indicator. So it means if we over perform, we’re not penalised.”

But Donelan was quick to dispel rumours that the move was a “mission to creep back into the EU”.

She added: “This is fantastic news, not just for British scientists and researchers but also the British taxpayer.

“What we’re announcing today is a great deal, a deal that many said we won’t be able to get.”

The news is no doubt a triumph to Rishi Sunak who continues to face mounting pressure over the safety of crumbling schools and the resignation of former Tory whip Chris Pincher.

But not everyone was quick to pop the champagne, with criticism of the prime minister flooding social media platform ‘X’. Here’s a pick of the best reactions:

UK to rejoin EU Horizon programme. Next rejoin Erasmus. Next rejoin Single Market. Next rejoin EU.

And never let these Tory cunts back into power again.

Horizon rejoined.

Next WILL be the extension of rules of origin grace periods for electric vehicles.

UK-EU relations will continue on their inexorable path towards relations reflecting geography. https://t.co/i3zJlAaU1q

Finally 💥 U.K. to rejoin #Horizon

Step by step #Brexit is being undone! https://t.co/Q7Eo4r3SWg

— Liz Webster (@LizWebsterSBF) September 6, 2023

These incompetents took us out of Horizon in the first place. Now we are an associate without any say. UK is now an associate of Horizon and Copernicus but not Euratom. This is inferior to what we had in the EU. There is nothing here to brag about. https://t.co/s7BpR0Igfp

Most Brits recognise #Brexit isn’t working. Courageous politicians should lead the debate about why and how we should be rejoining the #EU #Horizon #Erasmus https://t.co/gJ8UK4wb0o

If true, great…

Now rejoin Erasmus, because young people deserve every opportunity…

And then simply rejoin the European Union, because Britain and Europe belong together !https://t.co/ALjMlL4hio

It’s ludicrous it took the @Conservatives so long to rejoin Horizon. This announcement is too late for many researchers, businesses and academics who have already lost out in billions of funding and taken their jobs and expertise elsewhere.

So, UK is going to rejoin the EU’s Horizon scheme.

Over time we will rejoin all the EU schemes.

Brexit was, is, and always will be, utterly absurd.

— Siobhan Benita 🇺🇦🌻 (@SiobhanBenita) September 7, 2023

No, Prime Minister.
We’re rejoining Horizon two years after a wholly unnecessary departure. During that period our outstanding research universities have been paying the heavy price, like the rest of us, of the Conservative Government’s incompetence & isolationist ideology. https://t.co/dQAlForhII

Let me correct that for you.

DEAL DONE: The UK REJOINS Horizon Europe which it never should have left in the first place https://t.co/NRW0j66dFJ

— Otto English (@Otto_English) September 7, 2023

“Bespoke” because – as this government document reveals – the withdrawal from Horizon produced such damage to our European scientific collaboration that there are significant start up costs. The EU has offered help in a spirit of European collaboration. https://t.co/bWBDLIKr9C
