Labour jumped from fourth to first in Halton-with-Aughton and from third to first in Thetford Priory in a huge night of council by-elections.

The party won Halton-with-Aughton (Lancaster) for the first time ever with a gain of +18.0. They edged out the Green Party and the Conservatives who picked up 27.2 per cent and 26.2 per cent of the vote respectively.

Huge ground was also made up in Norfolk where the party took Thetford Priory from the Conservatives with a swing of +28.0. The party picked up a huge 57.7 per cent of the vote, ahead of the Tories with 29.5 per cent and UKIP with just 12.8 per cent.

Thetford Priory (Breckland) result:

LAB: 57.7% (+28.0)
CON: 29.5% (-3.7)
UKIP: 12.8% (-24.3)

Labour GAIN from Conservative.

Overall Labour held four seats, including Trimdon and Thornley in Durham, as 12 contests took place.

The Tories held five seats in towns including St Edmundsbury, in Suffolk, and Harrogate, according to Britain Elects.

Well, it’s really a Labour gain from UKIP isn’t it? Shhh, don’t tell Laura Pidcock. Blaming migration for low wages works https://t.co/GQPBM0Sxcu

Journalism in Britain is under threat. The government is becoming increasingly authoritarian and our media is run by a handful of billionaires, most of whom reside overseas and all of them have strong political allegiances and financial motivations.

Our mission is to hold the powerful to account. It is vital that free media is allowed to exist to expose hypocrisy, corruption, wrongdoing and abuse of power. But we can't do it without you.
