Guy Verhofstadt today significantly revised down Theresa May’s claim that Brexit is 95 per cent, saying the withdrawal deal is “zero per cent” finished.

The European Parliament’s Brexit co-coordinator spoke out after the Prime Minister looked to appease fellow ministers with assurances that we are well on our way to completing a deal with Brussels.

In a speech to MEPs he said unless the Irish border row is resolved the deal is “zero per cent” finished as he mocked May’s estimation.

He said: “Britain has always had difficulties with the metric system.”

“If it is 90 or 95 percent, if there’s no solution for the Irish border, for our Parliament it’s zero percent that is agreed for the moment.”

On Monday, Mrs May told MPs in the House of Commons “95 percent” of the withdrawal agreement is now completed between the UK and EU.

The European Union’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier told France’s Inter Radio that “90 per cent” of the accord on the table has been agreed with Britain, highlighting that there is still a lot of uncertainty around progress.

Journalism in Britain is under threat. The government is becoming increasingly authoritarian and our media is run by a handful of billionaires, most of whom reside overseas and all of them have strong political allegiances and financial motivations.

Our mission is to hold the powerful to account. It is vital that free media is allowed to exist to expose hypocrisy, corruption, wrongdoing and abuse of power. But we can't do it without you.
