A fire has broke out in a high rise building in Mile End.

Eight fire engines and 58 firefighters are currently at the scene.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) say half of a flat on the 12th floor of a tower block is alight in Wellington Way, Mile End.

A massive pall of smoke could be seen from central London billowing from Grafton House in Mile End.

London Fire Brigade said the fire started in a flat on the twelfth floor of the block just after 12 noon.

Eight fire engines and at least 58 firefighters were scrambled to the scene.

More than 80 ‘999’ calls were received by the Brigade.

There were no early reports of any casualties.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said:” Eight fire engines and 58 firefighters and officers have been called to a flat fire in Wellington Way, Mile End.

“Half of a flat on the 12th floor is alight.

“The Brigade’s 999 Control Officers have taken more than 80 calls to the fire.

“The Brigade was called at 1228.

“Fire crews from Bethnal Green, Shadwell, Stratford, Whitechapel and surrounding fire stations are at the scene.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.”

The blaze broke out as a public inquiry continues into the Grenfell Tower blaze in west London last June in which 72 people died.
