West African food is among the best, most varied and interesting in the World – Agreed? Despite the rich and deep West African heritage of many of our fellow Londoners, West African restaurants are almost criminally few in number – Agreed? Let’s face it, hard to disagree with either point!
So now is your chance to help some of the great people trying their hardest to bring us these culinary delights. I’m talking about the wonderful people behind Little Boabab, which is London’s only dedicated Senegalese restaurant. Founded by Chef Khadim Mane, has launched a £50,000 crowdfunding campaign to help it find a new permanent home following the unexpected closure of the Africa Centre in Southwark due to financial stress, where the restaurant was previously based.

Little Baobab has spent the past decade introducing diners to Senegalese cuisine and culture, evolving from East London pop-ups with live music to a street food stall at Peckham Levels, and most recently, a 35-seat restaurant at the Africa Centre. During its two years at the centre, it won the African Food Award at the Be Inclusive Hospitality Awards 2025.

Despite the sudden closure, Khadim and his team are determined to find a permanent home for Little Baobab. With potential new sites already under consideration, the campaign aims to raise £50,000 to complete the funding needed for the next chapter, covering design and building work, additional furniture and kitchen equipment, and pre-opening costs.

Beyond the restaurant, Little Baobab is a community hub celebrating Senegalese and African heritage through food, music, and dance. It also runs cooking classes for young people, providing training and opportunities for those from diverse backgrounds. The crowdfunding campaign offers a range of rewards, including pre-paid meals, cooking classes with Chef Khadim and private dining experiences.
