Beer of the Week: Porterhouse Brewing Company Bounty Hunter

In celebration of their 21st anniversary, The Porterhouse Brewing Company began to supply their range of craft beers throughout the United Kingdom last year. Initially opening Ireland’s first brewpub, The Porterhouse Brewing Company was launched by cousins Liam LeHart and Oliver Hughes, spotting an opportunity to compete against the bland beers being produced by mass-producing breweries at the time. Since then, the brewery has developed a strong core range and launched a €6 million state of the art brewery in Dublin to keep up with rising demand across the UK and Europe.

Coinciding with St Patrick’s Day, Porterhouse also launched their Bounty Hunter Coconut Porter last week: the first official new beer to emerge from the new brewery. Bounty Hunter is also the first beer from The Porterhouse Beer Project, set up to challenge the brewery’s employees to work together in designing their own beer. This nitro coconut porter was envisaged by Porterhouse distributers Phil Tavey, “Bodge” Kennedy, Mark Cadden, Paul Russell and Kieran Brennan.

On tap, the beer is pumped with the aid of nitrous oxide. From the bottle, however, Bounty Hunter is dark with a thin off-white head and lively carbonation. On the nose initial notes of freshly-cut grass are prominent, followed by aromas of milk chocolate, feint coconut shavings, green apple and yeast that’s marginally evocative of smoked meats. Strong coconut savours are more pronounced on the palate, joined by dark chocolate, cocoa, hazelnut and light roasted malt notes. Velvety and medium bodied, Bounty Hunter is sweet, concluded with a herbal, faintly salty, slightly bitter finish.

Speaking on the launch of Bounty Hunter, Porterhouse Brewing Company founding partner, Liam LaHart said: “Since we began brewing, we have managed to remain true to our original values of honesty, independence and our commitment to quality. The Porterhouse Beer Project was set up to embrace the ideas and creativity of our employees and drive innovation from within. By challenging our employees to team up, design their own beer from brewery to first pour and mentoring their journey along the way – our passion runs throughout the business and is reflected company-wide, whether you are based in an office or a bar. It’s integral to who we are. The healthy competition has created some very exciting new brews, the first of which will be unveiled for St Patrick’s Day.”
