‘Beaujolais nouveau’ of the beer world trots into Leadenhall Market

Beer lovers will have the chance for a unique tasting at Leadenhall Market’s 18th-century pub, The Lamb Tavern, later this month.

Arriving by traditional dray horse and cart, the first barrels of this year’s iconic limited edition Young’s Winter Warmer – a champion cask ale – will be opened and served to customers alongside a hearty English breakfast.

For the first time in Winter Warmer history, ale aficionados will be able to taste the inaugural barrels of the brew at The Lamb Tavern, within the City of London’s beautiful Victorian Market building, Leadenhall Market.

Hailed as the definitive winter beer, for over five decades the ale has been produced annually to embody the spirit of the season. Punters wanting to be amongst the first to taste the malt brew can sup their pints at The Lamb Tavern’s Winter Warmer Breakfast, taking place on Friday 27th October, from 10:00am – 12:00pm.

The Lamb is the sole venue in central London to be holding the first tastings – with the White Cross in Richmond the only other location in the UK.

In the 1870s Young’s had a fleet of 27 dray horses – mostly black shires – who delivered beer from the Ram Brewery in Wandsworth to pubs throughout the capital. To celebrate this history, the dray horse and cart will arrive at 10am, with the first pint served on the historic cobbles of Leadenhall Market shortly afterwards. Ticketholders will then head to the beautiful dining room overlooking the market for breakfast and beers served until the barrels run dry.

Priced at £25 for a full English breakfast, a pint of Winter Warmer and a unique branded scarf, hat and socks set to keep visitors toasty throughout the chilly season, tickets can be booked by emailing [email protected].

A £5 donation from each ticket sale will be made to Wooden Spoon’s Pass the Plate initiative on behalf of the customer for much-needed food banks in the capital, with more money being raised through additional Winter Warmer merchandise available in the pub.

A previous champion cask beer and Gold Medal Winner at the Brewing Industry International Awards, Winter Warmer is a 100 per cent malt brew, with Maris Otter and Crystal malt combining Fuggle and Golding hops. Young’s unique cane sugar mix is added to the copper during the brewing process and the result is a luscious, full bodied, rich ruby coloured beer. For more information go to Young’s winter warmer
