Angela Merkel is odds-on to piece together a so-called ‘Jamaica Coalition’ in the wake of her underwhelming victory in Sunday’s German federal elections.

Merkel will enter her fourth term as Chancellor with just one third of the vote and she is now expected to partner with the yellow FDP party and the Greens to form a Jamaican collation.

The term refers to an association between the symbolic colours of German parties in such a coalition — black for the conservative CDU/CSU; yellow for the liberal FDP; and green for the Green Party — and the colours of the flag of Jamaica.

It became mathematically possible in 2005 and was initially discussed, but the Free Democrats decided that they would rather remain in opposition than form a coalition with the SPD or the Greens.

Betway’s Alan Alger, said: “The waning support for the two major parties in Germany has raised a few eyebrows and many are questioning the potential instability of this next German government.

“It looks highly likely that Angela Merkel will tie up a deal with the FDP and the Greens to form a Jamaican Coalition at odds of 1/6, while partnering with the Social Democrats looks about the only other alternative at 6/1.

“Merkel’s share of the vote has shrunk quite dramatically and commentators will now be questioning whether she’ll last a full fourth term. While it looks likely that Merkel will see it through until 2021 at 1/3, the 9/4 on her premiership being cut short looms large.”
