‘I don’t know why she’s doing it’: Lord Dubs blasts Braverman’s ‘poisonous’ migrant rhetoric

"It really makes local people say, 'well if the home secretary doesn't like these people why should we?'", the Labour peer said.

Lord Dubs has blasted Suella Braverman over her use of “poisonous” rhetoric towards migrants and asylum seekers.

Speaking to The London Economic, the Labour peer, who fled the Nazis as a child to seek refuge in the United Kingdom, hit out at the home secretary over recent speeches she has made in a bid to appeal to the Tory faithful.

During the party conference in Manchester, Braverman said there was a “surge” of “millions” of migrants around the world trying to come to the UK in comments that have provoked outrage.

“The wind of change that carried my own parents across the globe in the 20th century was a mere gust compared to the hurricane that is coming,” Braverman told delegates.

She added: “[The public] know another thing, that the future could bring millions more migrants to these shores, uncontrolled and unmanageable unless the government they elect next year acts decisively to stop that happening.”

Reacting to the comments, Lord Dubs described the comments as “appalling” and pointed out that it is not the first time she has used such language.
