Ryanair to start charging for pull-along suitcases in shake up of cabin rules

Ryainair is set to charge £6 for pull-along suitcases from November in a shake-up of its cabin rules.

The low cost airline will only allow passengers to take on “small personal bag” into the cabin for free, which will be required to fit under the seat in front.

A charge of £10 will still apply if passengers want to check a 10kg bag into the hold, and £25 for larger bags.

The new rules have been brought in to “speed up boarding”, the airline said, and not aimed at making money.

Under the new policy only 95 passengers per flight – around half of the total – will be permitted to pay for the right to take the extra bag on board.

Currently Ryanair allows customers a small personal bag, and passengers who have paid for priority boarding can take a 10kg bag into the cabin as well.

Kenny Jacobs, Ryanair’s chief marketing officer, said the new policy “will speed up boarding and cut flight delays” by encouraging people to either travel very light with just one small bag, or to check-in a medium-sized bag.
