easyJet flies under Austrian flag as it transitions to EU base

easyJet has started adding Austrian flags to its fleet as it makes the shift to Vienna.

The low-cost airline recently announced that it is planning to register 130 aircraft to fly under the new easyJet Europe banner in order to offset negative Brexit effects.

That means some 40 per cent of its entire fleet will now carry the Austrian emblem.

With a year to go until Britain leaves the European Union easyjet had already transferred half of its UK-registered Airbus A319s/A320s to its Vienna-based sibling easyJet Europe.

By securing a European Union (EU) air operator’s certificate (AOC) in Austria the airline will safeguard the LCC’s network should the UK and EU fail to agree on a new air transport accord before the UK exits the EU.

The airline will add flags to aircraft in countries where the safety regulator has made this a mandatory requirement, which is the case in Austria and Switzerland.

Headquartered in Vienna easyjet Europe will have full operational and financial control of the company. Thomas Haagensen, current director for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, was appointed Managing Director for the company.
