It’s been a busy weekend for Donald Trump. But then again, when is it not? His golf trips are few and far between in comparison to his first term, and these days, he appears to have found a new burning passion – telling his voters that they are thick as mince.
Idiocracy manifest: Trump supporters prove his point in hilarious fashion
Trump has, for better or worse, decided to hit the campaign trail ahead of the US midterm elections in November. However, the president isn’t proving to be the draw he once was. His approval rating has dropped to record lows, and the venues hosting his rallies continuously fail to sell out.
The disastrous conflict with Iran, which has triggered an affordability crisis in America, has characterised a chaotic second term for the billionaire, who is now scrambling to get voters back onside – even announcing a dubious diesel deal with Russia, in a desperate attempt to lower fuel prices.
And, if that sounds terrible, you should get a load of his new approach. On Saturday, Trump took to the stage, in front of his adoring public, and brazenly insulted their intelligence. With a less-than-eloquent delivery, he told the masses he ‘could say the stupidest things’, and they’d still clap for him.
“No, it’s true. There’s such love. Like, I mean.. it’s amazing, when you stand up here it’s just like, the love… I could say the stupidest things and you’d clap [audience applauds and cheers] – but I love you. And we don’t say the stupidest things. We say things of common sense.” | Donald Trump
Not the greatest election strategy we’ve seen…
Though he attempted to back-peddle, claiming that his fans are actually applauding ‘common sense’, the damage was done. The statement has proved to be one of the most viral clips of the weekend. And, for good measure, this isn’t the only set of collective intelligence he has insulted in the last few days.
Speaking at a briefing, he praised those in attendance as being ‘high IQ’. Which was all well and good, until he added in the phrase ‘for a change’. Though his defenders have said it was a jibe at the media, Trump has left the statement open to interpretation – which may not look great during an election campaign.
