Sarah Pochin given history lesson after ‘shameful’ World War 2 jibe at France

Yet another incident proving that Reform simply aren't a serious party fit to govern.

Reform’s Sarah Pochin has been roundly condemned for a sneering World War Two jibe aimed at France.

This week, Reform UK announced plans to use the Royal Navy to patrol the English Channel and push back small boat migrant crossings.

The feasibility and practicality of the policy has been widely questioned, with many saying it simply will not work and pointing out that international law means the navy would not simply be able to return small boats to the French coast.

Reform were asked how they would convince the French to accept migrants being returned to their shore and, unsurprisingly, had little answer.

If anyone was in any doubt about France’s openness to Reform’s plans, this was put to bed by a statement from the French government, saying it would be a “violation of French sovereignty as well as a violation of maritime law and international law.”

But, instead of acting like a grown-up party ready for government, willing to talk and negotiate with allies about diplomatic issues, Reform’s Sarah Pochin decided this was the time for a crass World War Two joke towards the French.

In a post on X, she wrote: “Pity the French did not show the same resolve in defending their sovereignty in June 1940.”

The Runcorn and Helsby MP – who was born 24 years after the end of the Second World War – has been widely condemned for the tweet, with one of the main points of anger being that it is quite simply historically inaccurate.

Others gave Pochin a much-needed history lesson on the bravery of the French Resistance throughout the war and the role French soldiers played in aiding the Dunkirk evacuation when it was famously British troops who had to flee.

Sarah, we tease the French, but you are simply insulting them. France lost 92,000 servicemen dead in 1940. Another 24,000 lost their lives fighting for the resistance. They lost around 215,000 dead in total, in WW2. That’s some pretty tough resolve.

Visit the war graves of some of the 100,000 French soldiers who died for France in 1940. Then apologise, you vile woman.

SHAME ON YOU

That’s possibly the most disgusting thing we’ve heard from a Reform person yet

Never forget what our brave men and women went through with all our allies as well

Stupid dumb uneducated and quite frankly embarrassing

Oh, Christ. A war reference.

Just a reminder that it wasn’t just the French that ran away. The Brits did too. You might remember, it was quite famous. Thousands of Brits retreated on small boats. Rather apt reference, as it happens.

— Tony (@TonyB_1997) August 3, 2026

Many British servicemen and women who made it back to these shores owed their lives to the bravery of French citizens.

Stop talking of our ally as if they are our enemy.

You bring shame to our great country with your ignorant and pathetic comments. How on earth did you ever get elected?

— Cllr Andrew Varney 🔶 🇬🇧🇺🇦 (@AndrewJVarney) August 3, 2026

It was the French that saved the British in Dunkirk, do not insult all those who died for your freedom.
