Farage’s excuse for not attending Budget has been completely debunked

Farage's excuses have been labelled 'not credible' and 'total bull.'

Nigel Farage’s reason for not being in the chamber for the Budget has been rubbished by MPs from all sides of the house, whilst reports have cast doubt on his claims as well.

On Wednesday, chancellor John Healey delivered his first budget to the House of Commons.

But one person who wasn’t present in the chamber for one of the biggest days in the parliamentary calendar was the man aiming to become the country’s next prime minister, Nigel Farage.

It was reported by the Telegraph that Farage didn’t attend the budget because his prayer card – a green slip of paper that reserves a backbencher’s seat on the Commons benches – had been removed.

Later in the day, Farage was asked about the story and why he wasn’t present for the budget.

The Reform UK leader claimed that he feared he would have been involved in a “physical altercation” if he had tried to take his seat in the Commons.

Farage claimed that his prayer card being removed meant that he was “heading towards another physical altercation.”

“Sometimes, it’s better to avoid conflict,” he added.

🚨 WATCH: Nigel Farage says he didn't attend the Budget in Parliament to "avoid a physical altercation"

But since then, his story has been completely debunked by both MPs and journalists.

Following Farage’s comments, the Telegraph reported that the Clacton MP did not attend prayers, which is when MPs can reserve their seat before the start of every Commons session.

According to the publication, Farage also did not approach Commons staff regarding a seat reservation.

His prayer card was then removed as per Chamber protocol because it did not display a valid date stamp.

NEW @Telegraph understands Nigel Farage did not display a valid date stamp on his prayer card and it was removed as per Chamber protocol.

I also understand Mr Farage did not attend prayers and did not approach Commons staff regarding a seat reservation.https://t.co/BEHq5CRiFW

Along with this, several MPs have rubbished Farage’s excuses for not attending the budget.

Shadow foreign secretary Tom Tugendhat said his claims about a “physical altercation” were not “credible,” writing in a post on X: “If you want to be in the chamber for the budget, there’s always a way.”

Sorry, this isn’t credible. If you want to be in the chamber for the budget, there’s always a way. https://t.co/qEXSzieZVQ

Labour MP Daniel Francis asked why Farage’s Reform colleagues had not made space for their leader, claiming they had done exactly this for Danny Kruger.

I was in the Chamber half hour before prayers.

At no time since 11.00 did he enter the chamber.

The recording shows Danny Kruger wasn't present at 11.54 but by start of PMQs, his colleagues had shuffled up to allow him a seat. Why couldn't they do the same for their Leader? https://t.co/Cq9vofaxkb

Meanwhile, Lib Dem Caroline Voaden said Farage’s “physical altercation” allegation was “not true.”

And we both know that’s not true Nigel don’t we?

I’m still waiting for the apology you were required to write to me… Though I won’t hold my breath https://t.co/p6nwypRK1F

And deputy Tory leader Alex Burghart simply labelled it “complete guff.”

What utter guff https://t.co/ZiQiXIAecM

Plenty of other MPs from all sides of the house cast doubt on Farage’s excuses, with some describing them as “total bull,” “fake news,” and the “weakest excused I’ve ever heard.”

This is total bull.

Any of the Reform MPs could have given their seat up for him.

There were lots of seats without reservation, when exactly did Farage come into the chamber looking for a seat? https://t.co/ghENJvsH0T

— Alicia Kearns MP (@aliciakearns) October 28, 2026

Fake news.

I was 2nd in the MPs’ queue from 7.30am this morning (behind Des Swayne) for a prayer card to reserve a seat and there was no sign of Farage then.

I didn’t see him come to prayers at 11.30am to come and claim a seat then either.

You snooze, you lose. https://t.co/WlsaPjh6n8

Possibly the weakest excuse for not attending the budget I’ve ever heard.

Looks to me like there’s a space next to Carla Lockhart where Nigel Farage usually sits. Why didn’t Tice save him a seat?

Admittedly not as many free seats as at Reform’s budget launch, but still… https://t.co/IxNaxHNHO8 pic.twitter.com/q3DCR44lq4

The idea that Farage couldn't attend the Budget because his prayer card was moved is the latest eye-rollingly predictable attempt at grievance politics.

I didn't put a prayer card in. I turned up just before prayers and there were loads of spaces.

Farage, as far as I could… https://t.co/PG5MjDiRRu
