Donald Trump could face an unprecedented moment during the presidential primary in New York next year.
Governor Kathy Hochul has signed a Bill setting the date for April 2nd, potentially putting the former president on the ballot as he stands trial in Manhattan for a hush-money criminal case.
The new primary date could add a new layer to an increasingly chaotic calendar for Trump next year, as the Republican frontrunner attempts to navigate court cases in multiple states while he seeks a return to the White House.
His New York trial is set to begin on March 25th, and though the date could change, it may set up an extraordinary scenario in which the former president might find himself in court as Republican voters in the state are picking their next presidential candidate.
But he will be buoyed by the latest betting odds which suggest he is now a firm favourite to win the election.
William Kedjanyi, Political betting Analyst at Star Sports, said: “Ahead of the second televised Republican debate next week, Donald Trump has now overtaken Joe Biden as the favourite with us to win next year’s US Presidential Election.
“The Republican was 2/1 at the start of the week to claim a second stint in the White House when the voters go to the ballot next year, but is now the 15/8 frontrunner following a set of tight head-to-head polls.
“Current President Joe Biden has conversely seen his price widen for a second successive term from 15/8 to 2/1, with Gavin Newsom (12/1), Michelle Obama (16/1) and Ron DeSantis (16/1) also deemed to be within a shout should he face a Democratic challenge, with some fears over his age.”
