Tory MP Charlie Elphicke referred to police for ‘serious allegations’

Conservative MP Charlie Elphicke has been suspended by the Conservatives following ‘serious allegations’ that have been referred to the police.

Mr Elphicke, has been the MP for Dover since 2010, and is also a former party whip.

Mr Elphiche has denied any wrongdoing and accused the Tory party of tipping off the police before they informing him of his suspension.

The married 46-year-old MP released a statement on Twitter saying:

‘The party tipped off the press before telling me of my suspension.’

‘I am not aware of what the alleged claims are and deny any wrongdoing.’

New Tory party chief whip, Julian Smith has issued a statement announcing Mr Elphicke’s suspension. However, the party has not released any futher detail about the nature of the allegations, other than the fact they have been referred to the police. The Tory party also didn’t reveal any detail about who had made a complaint about him.

Following a number of allegations of sexual abuse and misconduct in Parliament, concern is growing in Westminster regarding the conduct of politicians.

This suspension marks another difficult period for Theresa May in an already weak and destabilised Conservative Party. This week Sir Michael Fallon resigned after allegations emerged that he touched a journalist’s knee inappropriately.

The Conservatives have been quick to publish a new code of conduct for MPs as well as adopting a new complaints procedure.

However, May will be meeting opposition leaders in order to homogenise a complaints and grievance system so that vulnerable people don’t have to ‘navigate different grievance procedures according to political party’.
