The lawyer for Shamima Begum’s family says there are “strong but as yet unconfirmed reports” that her baby son has died.
Tasnime Akunjee wrote on Twitter: “We have strong but as yet unconfirmed reports that Shamima Begums son has died. He was a British Citizen.”
Begum’s son, Jarrah, was born only a few weeks ago. Two earlier children died while in Islamic State Group territory.
According to reports in The Mirror the pair were in hospital in recent days.
Earlier this week the Home Office responded to Renu Begum’s letter requesting assistance for Shamima Begums son, saying it is not a matter for the Home Office but the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).
Last month Darragh Roche argued in The London Economic that “Shamima Begum’s baby does not deserve to be abandoned by the British state”.
He said: “He doesn’t deserve to suffer because of her mistakes or her potential crimes, still less the actions of his now absent father”
“Those shouting the loudest about this case seem to think that abandoning this child is an acceptable price to pay to avoid the disgust and discomfort that letting Begum come home would cause.
“So much for taking the moral high ground.”
