If May’s deal isn’t backed UK could not leave EU at all, says Jeremy Hunt

Jeremy Hunt has made some controversial statements about Brexit and how it might not happen at all.

He believes that if the PMs deal on Brexit is not backed by Parliament then the UK could remain in the EU.

If May’s deal was voted down it might lead to “Brexit paralysis” which would see the UK in the European trading area.

This outcome would be “enormously damaging” for politicians’ relationships with voters and Britain’s global reputation, Hunt commented.

“If we were, as a political class, not to deliver Brexit that would be a fundamental breach of trust between the people and the politicians and I think that would be something that we would regret for many, many generations,” Hunt told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

Hunt continued:  “If this deal is rejected, ultimately what we may end up with is not a different type of Brexit, but Brexit paralysis. And Brexit paralysis ultimately could lead to no Brexit.

“I’m saying this would be [an] incredibly damaging breach of trust and it would also be very bad for Britain’s reputation abroad, having decided to leave the EU, if we in the end for whatever reasons found we weren’t able to do.”
