Twelve people were arrested following anti-migrant protests in the south coast town of Gosport.

On Sunday, 149 migrants were picked up by the RNLI and brought ashore in the Hampshire town, before being taken to a processing centre in Kent.

This sparked a protest against the arrivals, as some 350 anti-migrant demonstrators became involved in a stand-off with police at a marina.

The BBC reports that flares were set off and there were scuffles between police and protestors, with some protestors stopping police vans by standing in front of them and shouting “deport the lot.”

Around 150 anti-migrant demonstrators gathered in Gosport in Hampshire to stop a group of migrants, who had crossed the English Channel in a small boat, being brought ashore by the RNLI.

Hampshire police has since confirmed 11 men and one woman were arrested following the unrest, on offences including assaulting a police officer and racially aggravated public order.

The force said some officers were treated at the scene for injuries, but no one was seriously injured.

Assistant Chief Constable Simon Dodds said: “Violence and criminal damage have no part in peaceful protest.

“Our position on this has been clear that we will investigate thoroughly and take robust action against anyone responsible.
