Britain has significantly lowered its expectations for Brexit, giving few assurances other than that it is unlikely to end in “Mad Max-style dystopia”.

Despite significant promises being made for Britain’s exit from the European Union in the run-up to the referendum, two years down the line the Secretary of State for Exiting the EU today only managed to give assurances that we will not be “plunged into a Mad Max-style world borrowed from dystopian fiction”.

Addressing business leaders in Vienna, David Davis referred to the series of action films which portray societal collapse in a lawless future world in order to appease doubters.

The film franchise, which uses slogans such as “the madness is about to begin” and “the future belongs to the mad”, has since been likened to the slogans used by the Leave campaign.

Davis said of the government’s critics: “They fear that Brexit could lead to an Anglo-Saxon race to the bottom.

“With Britain plunged into a Mad Max-style world borrowed from dystopian fiction. These fears about a race to the bottom are based on nothing, not our history, not our intentions, not our national interest.

Journalism in Britain is under threat. The government is becoming increasingly authoritarian and our media is run by a handful of billionaires, most of whom reside overseas and all of them have strong political allegiances and financial motivations.

Our mission is to hold the powerful to account. It is vital that free media is allowed to exist to expose hypocrisy, corruption, wrongdoing and abuse of power. But we can't do it without you.
