Brexit – Government preparing for “riots on the streets”

The government is preparing for “riots on the streets” in a No Deal Brexit , the former head of the UK civil service has declared.

Lord Kerslake also said the UK is not ready to leave the European Union and pleaded for Article 50 to be delayed.

He told the BBC: “It’s unnecessary.

“The government could stop this now.

“I think they could say we think, as many of the cabinet have already said privately, that no deal Brexit is simply not a realistic or viable option.

“We shouldn’t be preparing for riots in the streets, which is what we are doing at the moment.

“I have to tell you there are many civil servants and local government workers spending significant time not on the jobs they’re paid to do but actually preparing for this possibility.”

BBC Radio 4 interviewer John Humphrys suggested Kerslake’s warning was an over exaggeration.

However, Kerslake said: “It’s undoubtedly happening, trust me on this.”

Mrs May is heading to Dublin tonight for dinner with Irish Premier Leo Varadkar to discuss her Brexit deal.
