A hero police officer clung on to a van hanging precariously over the edge of a motorway bridge to stop it from toppling below — with his BARE HANDS.

PC Martin Willis – known as Motorway Martin – managed to hold on long enough for emergency services to arrive who then freed the trapped driver.

It’s believed the male driver lost control of the van and almost careered down an A1(M) embankment.

He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service crews used wire ropes to drag the van to safety.

PC Willis, who patrols the M62 from junction 22 to 27, described how he clung on to the wheel of the vehicle to stop it from swaying in the wind and falling off the bridge.

He tweeted on Friday: “1st on the scene of this collision on the #A1M this morning and faced with a vehicle balancing over the edge of a bridge with the driver trapped!

“After holding on to the vehicle to stop it swaying in the wind I can’t begin to describe my relief when @WYFRS arrived on scene!”

A police officer has been hailed a hero after clinging on to a van which was hanging precariously over the edge of a motorway bridge — using just his BARE HANDS.

The accident happened close to junction 44 for Aberford and Bramham, near Leeds, in icy conditions on Friday morning.

Two Northbound lanes of The A1(M) were closed for most of the day.
