Americans asked not to shoot at Hurricane Irma

Americans have been strongly advised not to shoot at Hurricane Irma after Facebook groups were set up inviting fellow patriots to take aim at the megastorm.

More than 26,000 Facebook users have pledged to “gun down Irma” as of 10am today, prompting the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office to respond.

The Sheriff’s Office yesterday tweeted “To clarify, DO NOT shoot weapons @ #Irma. You won’t make it turn around & it will have very dangerous side effects”.

The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence also posted: “Unfortunately we must issue the following warning DO NOT SHOOT YOUR GUNS AT THE HURRICANE!!!”

One host of a viral “Shoot at Hurricane Irma” event said he started it as a joke, but it’s unclear whether his humour has been lost on some gun-toting locals.
